The Legal & Literary Society of Osgoode Hall Law School

    What is Legal & Lit?

T he Legal & Literary Society was founded in 1876 and is responsible for coordinating and funding the numerous professional, athletic, social and extracurricular activities at Osgoode Hall Law School. Osgoode Hall Law School is situated on land which is the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations. The area known as Tkaronto has been care taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron-Wendat, and the Métis. It is now home to many Indigenous Peoples. We acknowledge the current treaty holders, the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. This territory is subject of the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement to peaceably share and care for the Great Lakes region.

Colloquially called ‘Legal & Lit’, the body is the primary student government at Osgoode Hall Law School, and works in collaboration with Osgoode Hall Student Caucus to provide student services which help keep Osgoode Hall Law School one of Canada’s most prestigious law schools. Legal & Lit is the student-facing government, concerned with building community, supporting students through their degrees, and advocating on behalf of student life issues. Student Caucus is the faculty-facing government, concerned with providing a student voice on university administration issues such as faculty recruitment, research priorities, and academic standing.

Legal & Lit is governed by a group of student leaders, the Executive, who are elected annually from all three years of the J.D. program. However, every J.D. student of Osgoode Hall is a member of Legal & Lit and everyone is encouraged to get involved and participate.
